What to Pack for Kashmir: Season-wise Clothing Essentials
By Yasmeen Jan•Published on 15 May 2026
Introduction
Packing for Kashmir can be tricky due to the high variation in altitude. While Srinagar might feel warm in summer, a drive up to Gulmarg or Sonamarg glacier points will bring cooler winds. This article breaks down exactly what to pack for each season in J&K.
1. Spring & Summer Packing (April to August)
During the day, Srinagar is sunny and warm, but temperatures drop after sunset. We recommend the following packing plan:
- Light Cottons: T-shirts, linen trousers, and breathable dresses for sightseeing in Srinagar gardens.
- Light Layers: A couple of cardigans, light sweaters, or denim jackets. A windcheater is useful for high altitude stops in Gulmarg or Sonamarg.
- Comfortable Shoes: Walking sneakers for garden pathways and stone pathways. Avoid heels as terrain is uneven.
2. Autumn Packing (September to November)
Autumn brings crisp, cooler air. Packing warm layers is highly recommended:
- Warm Sweaters & Jackets: Pack woolens, warm cardigans, and fleece jackets.
- Thermals: A pair of thermal tops and bottoms is recommended for October and November visits, especially if staying overnight in Pahalgam.
- Scarves & Stoles: Elegant Kashmiri stoles or woolen mufflers provide warmth and style in chilly winds.
3. Winter Packing (December to February)
Winter in Kashmir is freezing, with temperatures dropping below 0°C. You will need heavy-duty winter wear:
- High-Quality Thermals: Pack at least 3 sets of wool-blend thermals.
- Down Jackets & Coats: A thick down jacket or wind-resistant overcoat is absolutely essential.
- Gloves, Beanies, and Woolen Socks: Bring waterproof gloves if you plan to play in the snow, heavy woolen caps to cover your ears, and multiple pairs of thick woolen socks.
- Snow Boots: Waterproof, high-traction boots to prevent slipping on ice. Snow boots can also be rented locally in Gulmarg.
4. Medical & Skincare Essentials
Do not forget to pack these essential items:
- Moisturizers & Lip Balms: Cold mountain air dries skin quickly. Bring heavy creams and sunblock (high SPF) as UV radiation is stronger at higher altitudes.
- Motion Sickness Pills: The mountain roads to Pahalgam and Gulmarg feature twisting curves. Pack medications if you are prone to motion sickness.
